What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal conditions — particularly problems affecting the spine, joints, muscles and nervous system.

Chiropractic care is often associated with back and neck pain, but chiropractors can assess and manage a wide range of musculoskeletal problems. Our aim is to understand what is causing your symptoms, help reduce pain and improve your movement and function.

What does a chiropractor do?

At Surbiton Chiropractic Centre, we believe that no two patients are the same. Your treatment will always be based on your individual condition, symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

Our chiropractors use a variety of techniques as part of treatment, which may include:

Not every patient needs every technique. We select the most appropriate combination based on your assessment and what we believe will benefit you.

What makes chiropractic care different?

One of the things that distinguishes chiropractic care is the extensive training chiropractors receive in hands-on assessment and treatment of the musculoskeletal system.

Joint manipulation is an important part of many chiropractors’ skill set, but it is only one part of the care we provide. Our chiropractors are trained in a wide range of assessment and treatment techniques and will use the approaches that are most appropriate for you.

We are committed to continually developing our skills and knowledge. Our team regularly attends courses and professional training to keep up to date with developments in musculoskeletal care and ensure we continue to provide the highest standard of treatment.

Is chiropractic care right for me?

Chiropractic care can be suitable for people of all ages and activity levels, from those experiencing everyday aches and pains to professional and elite athletes.

If we believe another healthcare professional would be better suited to your needs, we will always be open and honest about this and can recommend you to someone within our trusted network.

If you’re unsure whether chiropractic care could help with your problem, get in touch with our team and we can discuss your symptoms and advise you on the most appropriate next step.

What to expect at your first appointment

We want you to feel comfortable and confident from the moment you walk through our doors. Your first appointment is about understanding you, your symptoms and what you want to achieve from your care.

Your chiropractor will begin by talking to you about your symptoms and taking a detailed medical and lifestyle history. We will discuss when your problem started, how it affects you and any factors that may be contributing to it.

We will also talk about your goals and what you would like to get back to doing.

Following your consultation, your chiropractor will carry out a thorough physical examination. This may include assessing your posture, movement, strength, reflexes and the way your joints and muscles are functioning.

If appropriate, your chiropractor may also perform specific orthopaedic or neurological tests to help understand your condition.

Once your assessment is complete, your chiropractor will explain their findings and discuss them with you in clear, straightforward language.

Where appropriate, we will then recommend a treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals. We will always explain what we are recommending and why, so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Where it is appropriate and safe to do so, treatment can often begin during your first appointment.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include joint manipulation, soft tissue techniques, dry needling, exercises, rehabilitation and advice.

However, treatment will not always be provided at the first appointment. If your chiropractor feels that further investigation, imaging or assessment by another healthcare professional is required, we will explain this to you and recommend the most appropriate next step.

We believe you should always understand your treatment and feel comfortable with the approach being taken. We will discuss your options with you and answer any questions you may have before treatment begins.

All of our chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and are members of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).

We are committed to maintaining high professional standards and continually developing our knowledge and clinical skills through ongoing education and training.
